Heat and humidity builds it way through all kinds of clothing when you climb the Mount Faber hill by foot via Pender Road. Looking back over your shoulder you see the backdrop of everything Singapore has to offer encapsuled through one view. Lush, green jungle trees, blue dreamy waters, island life with swaying cable cars and big city skyscrapers. This is where we are all building our dreams through everyday life. Singapore.

Let’s dig a little deeper, because the burdensome journey that causes your legs to fell like they’ve been filled with cement, rewards you when you reach number 10 on Pender Road. The Danish Seamen’s Church. The foundation of Danish culture and tradition. All the bricks to piece together your perfect solace when you’re missing home is found within these walls. Language, humour, food, “hygge”. You will find that this magnificent building caters for both the needs of your tummy, your mind, your soul and your heart. It is a tiny piece of Denmark that has been placed upon a mighty mountain top in Singapore.

At the moment all the bricks to the puzzle, that’ll make your heart yearn for home, are being restored and renovated. It’s often said that we best grow old by taking good care of both our body and soul. In Singapore’s humid heat, the same rings true for Black & White buildings. So the beloved Danish Seamen’s Church is at the moment doing, what many here in Singapore loves to do: it’s being catered for from top to toe. A full restoration of the magnificent Golden Bell. Our home away from home.

But lo and behold, an Easter celebration seems to be within reach. Not only shall we celebrate the resurrection of the Lord and God’s merciful promise to all mankind. We shall also celebrate the final result of almost two years of hard work, when the handover of the Church happens. It is scheduled to take place in April 2022.

We are of course carrying on with business at the moment as best as possible. While celebrating services on a construction site in the jungle, where we truly feel the importance of each others company, we do look forward to be in each others company in our magnificent building again. The religious classes for teenagers up for confirmation are also meeting under the tarpaulins and palm trees.

While we wait for the building to be finished, we also await the renovation that Singapore seems to be doing on our everyday life. Rome wasn’t build in a day. Neither is our way back to living with COVID-19. Our calendar is bursting with Business Lunches, Coffee Mornings, Youth Gatherings, Friday Night Bar, Quizz Night, Evening Services and much more. As soon as the current restrictions are lifted, we will unfold the calendar and look forward to inviting you in, in accordance with the guidelines and rules of the Government.

Something we have always used to build our dream upon in the Seamen’s Church is our Christmas Bazaar. It is quite frankly the footing that financially holds together the rest of the pillars that we structure our Church through. We therefore hope for your continuous support again for this year’s Bazaar. The Christmas Bazar won’t be the giant and joyous mass gathering at the Church, as we are used to. Simply because we don’t want the christmas food and lollies to dissapear between sealant and sawdust. If Santa will be allowed to set up a shop nearby with all his Scandinavian christmas decor is still unknown, but we are in close contact will all the superior goblins about what to do in order to still bring a Danish Christmas to Singapore. The food however is on it’s way, thanks to the generous support and help of Maersk and Wrist - and this year we should like to think, we can guarantee everyone who wants to celebrate a traditional Danish Christmas dinner (and as many days before and after), the supplies to make that happen. Sales will once again be through our webshop. The online shop will open next month for those of you that hasn’t already put in a pre-order. Pick-up or delivery will be depending on current restrictions by the end of November. Let’s hope for a Christmas miracle and an Easter awakening.
